The gas tube typically found in AR15/M16/M4-style weapons is replaced with a piston and a solid working “pusher” rod in the HK-exclusive MR556A1 gas piston operating mechanism. As hot carbon fouling and waste gases do not penetrate the receiver region, this manner of operation essentially eradicates the problems that are typical of direct impingement gas systems.
